WHO AM I
Janice Lyu is a multidisciplinary, data-driven product designer based in New York.
As a non-traditional designer with years of experience advocating health equity for the underserved, I am passionate in collaborating with multiple stakeholders to design impactful and empowering experiences. My past experiences have shaped me into the designer that I am today.
As a scientist by training, I am resilient and enjoy the iterative process to discover viable solutions and improve designs through robust research. As a prior healthcare worker, I believe that a successful product or service stems from a thoughtful consideration of the larger system.
I've led and shipped many Enterprise and 0 to 1 designs at high-growth startups in the past 3 years. I was able to solidify my expertise in design, product, and research thinking by building healthcare and data analytic tools.
MY DESIGN PRINCIPLES
I live by these design principles, which have guided my design work.

Process-oriented

Designing can not be done alone. I believe it’s important to engage with the right stakeholders and define a good working process to develop the right solution. We need to be adaptable in the process.

Data-driven

Design decision can not be solely based on opinion and intuition. I make the effort to always go back to the users and gather data.

System thinking

Nothing stands alone. We’re all interconnected and I believe that a successful product or service stems from thoughtful consideration of the larger system.

MY BACKGROUND
Previously, I was a public health professional designing preventative healthcare services.

Designing healthcare services and tools

I worked closely with care providers to develop a new screening service that integrated with existing workflow to provide preventative services for contacts at risk for hepatitis B. I also helped develop EHR tools and health education material to increase awareness for liver cancer.

Advocating for health equity

I lead hepatitis B advocacy in New York City annually, representing a coalition of more than 10 hepatitis B organizations to secure $ 1.9 million funds. I also participated in federal-level advocacy to support hepatitis B elimination efforts.
